Nexium (Esomeprazole) is a medical solution that is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, a condition in which backward flow of acid from the stomach causes heartburn and injury of the esophagus (food pipe between the mouth and stomach) in adults and children one year of age and older. Nexium is generally used to treat the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, allow the esophagus to heal, and prevent further damage to the esophagus. Nexium is also used to decrease the chance of getting an ulcer in people who are taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Sometimes this drug is used with other medications to prevent ant treat the return of stomach ulcers (also called a peptic ulcer) caused by a certain type of bacteria (stomach ulcers may be a symptom of another disease or condition). Generic Nexium is also used for long-term treatment of conditions in which the stomach makes too much acid. This medication works by decreasing the amount of acid made in the stomach.
Generic Nexium drug comes as a delayed-release capsule to take by mouth and give through a feeding tube and as granules to mix with water and take by mouth. Nexium drug is usually taken once a day one hour before a meal. When Nexium drug is used to treat or prevent some conditions in which the stomach makes too much acid, it is taken twice a day. Take Nexium at around the same time(s) every day. Take this drug exactly as prescribed by your doctor. |
